Arizona Downs Valpo

Arizona had some jittery moments in the first half before running away behind its defense in the second in a 73-64 win over Valparaiso in both team’s 2K Sports Classic opener. The Wildcats held Valparaiso without a field goal during an opening 16-3 run, with Jordin Mayes scoring eight points to put Arizona up 15.

Jesse Perry finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Kyle Fogg scored 16 points, and Nick Johnson had 14 points and six assists for the Wildcats.

Valparaiso got off to a solid start in coach Bryce Drew’s debut before Arizona’s pressure took it’s toll. Kevin Van Wijk and Ryan Broekhoff had 18 points each for the Crusaders.

“I think in the first half the guys came out a little tight. We were definitely excited about the game but we weren’t ready to play,” said Lindsey, one of the six newcomers on the roster. “In the second half we turned it up a notch and got more intense.”
